American X spotlights the people, events, and evolution of American popular culture in the twentieth and twenty-first century that shaped the everyday life of the American people. Through a decade-by-decade analysis of artifacts, writings, and biographies, students will examine the ways in which these material and nonmaterial cultural phenomena have shaped and reflected the collective social history of the United States. The approach will be historical as well as reflexive as students consider various aspects of American pop culture, both today and throughout our nation’s past.
Each week students will be expected to research the decade of the week starting with the 60s. They will then construct a Google slides presentation covering at least four examples from each of the eight areas of popular culture. They will post that on the Google classroom.
Presentations are due every Friday.
