LEADERSHIP ROLES AT HOME

One of the best ways to help your child realize their leadership potential is to provide them with an opportunity to lead.  Like other Leader In Me schools, we offer students leadership roles as a way to teach RESPONSIBILITY, LEADERSHIP, and CONTRIBUTION.  The same can be done in the home.

To begin:

  • Talk with your child about the leadership role she/he might be interested in at home.
  • Discuss why she/he is interested in the role.  Ask what leadership qualities she/he has that will help.  Ask how she/he will handle homework or other commitments with this new role.
  • Together, discuss, write, and sign the paper detailing the leadership behavior and expectations of the role.
  • Give your child a week or so to adjust and then discuss how it's going.  This may open a conversation on how to handle things that are too easy or too difficult.

FAMILY MISSION STATEMENTS

Mission Statements have long been part of organizations; they provide a clear path for what the organization wants to accomplish and how they plan to go about doing it.  Yet, seldom does a family take the time to write a mission statement and what organization is more important than the family?

By establishing who you are as a family, what you want to accomplish, and how you plan to do it, you Begin With the End in Mind.  The process is a great way to practice all of the 7 Habits.

First, consider what is the purpose of our family?  What are our family's highest priority goals?  What are our unique talents, gifts, and abilities?  What makes us the happiest?  What kind of home do we want to invite our friends to?  What makes us feel comfortable at home?  What makes you want to come home? 

Write your family Mission Statement as though it is timeless.  Consider all four areas: body, brain, heart, and soul.  Make it simple enough so that the youngest family members can memorize it and find it meaningful (1 to 2 lines).

Stay on course.  As parents, model living the Mission Statement.  By writing a family Mission Statement, the message to your children is that your family is important; you know who you are, what you want to accomplish, and how you are going to do it.
