WELCOME TO GATORXC

Our Cross Country program has been extremely successful throughout our history.  Our program is very much a family environment with a close-knit group of students and parents who are a part of every aspect of practice and competitions.

Cross Country is a running sport, in which athletes run on an outdoor course through natural terrain.  This sport is a long distance sport in which each age level runs varying distances:

Elementary (ELE) – 2K – 1.2 miles
Middle School (MS) – 3K – 1.8 miles
High School (JV/V) – 5K – 3.1 miles

Even though this is “Greenwood” Cross Country we are a team that competes at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels.  All practices are at the same time and at Phil Moore Park, except for the summer when the team will run together at Kereiakes Park, more about these will be discussed later.

CROSS COUNTRY MEETS

Most meets are on Saturdays, and typically last most of the morning and early afternoon.  Elementary races are always first, followed by middle school, and finishing with high school.  All teams (ELE, MS, HS) are unlimited in their number, varsity is the only team that is limited to 7 athletes, and the rest of the high school runners will run JV unless they earn a spot on the varsity team.  The team lines up together at the starting line in a row with all the other teams and the run out, sometimes consisting of 100’s of runners is a really exciting thing to see.  The team scores with the first 5 runners and the 6th and 7th runners are the tie breakers.  The goal is to get the lowest number (score) as possible.

The way we figure a score in a race is by adding the places of the first 5 runners on the team.  Example:

Runner 1 – 7th place overall
Runner 2 – 15th place overall
Runner 3 – 17th place overall
Runner 4 – 25th place overall
Runner 5 – 30th place overall

Total Team Score:  94 (7+15+17+25+30)
