Why is the WCPS Board of Education considering this move?
With all decisions, we strive to do what is best for the students of WCPS. We pride ourselves in continuous improvement, which requires constant monitoring and evaluation of all aspects within our school district in order to provide an optimum learning environment for all students.
Among the many reasons to consider the move is the advantage it creates in maximizing opportunities for our 6th graders. Access to advanced coursework, activities, clubs, and athletics are just a few of the reasons. In addition, the state curriculum is organized in a 6th-8th format, which limits opportunities for 6th grade teachers to collaborate with their 7th and 8th grade colleagues during the school day. Lastly, the potential increase of preschool students at our elementary schools will eventually impact the capacity at many of our elementary schools.
