Hi  Gator Family!

My name is Josh Owens.  I teach in the Moderate/Severe Disabilities (MSD) classroom here at Greenwood.  As I am a 1997 GHS graduate, I enrolled at Western Kentucky  University in the fall of that year where I would later earn a Corporate Communication degree.   From there, I went to the University of Kentucky where I received my Master’s of Science in Special Education to be certified to teach students Moderate/Severe Disabilities and also served as a Research Assistant for the Human Development Institute at UK with a focus on researching and implementing quality Peer Tutoring Programs across the state.  Since then, I earned an additional Master’s from Western Kentucky University to teach students with Learning and Behavior Disabilities.

I have taught students with special needs since 2003.  I began my teaching career in central Kentucky and  taught students with moderate/severe disabilities for four years from 2003 to 2007 in the 7th through 12th grades.  Then, I moved to the Bowling Green area to be close to family and taught students with learning/behavioral disabilities from 2007 to 2021 at Auburn School in Logan County  in grades ranging from 4th through 8th grades.

In the fall of 2021, I began teaching students in the MSD classroom here at my alma mater!  I love teaching students with disabilities and striving to cultivate a classroom environment that encourages growth in academic and social development and that EVERYONE is important and valued!

Also, Greenwood High School has also had a rich tradition of having an excellent peer tutoring program.  This is an option for students to take as a class where they have built friendships with and have helped students with disabilities with classwork, adaptive and vocational skills, while practicing communication and social skills along the way.

In the Spring semester of my  senior year, I enrolled in the peer tutoring class.   Little did I know, it would be a seed to what would later be my career path!   I loved being with students in that homeroom and loved seeing students with disabilities grow and shine in so many ways!.  Since then, working with, and teaching students with disabilities has been an enjoyment and passion of mine!  Teaching in the high school where I graduated from has been such a blessing;  the students here have so many talents and strengths and it is wonderful to see them learn and develop skills that will prepare them for adulthood!

If your student has demonstrated a love or strength  for helping others, I would love to have them interact with and help the students in this classroom across a semester or school year!

Finally, I have found that teachers, administration, and the student body here are so supportive of the students I teach everyday here at Greenwood.

So proud to be a Gator!
