|Warren East High School student Tyler Smith has been rewarded for persevering through tragedies in his life. He has been named to the Tom Leach Kentucky All-Resilient Team, an honor started by broadcaster Leach to recognize high school athletes who have overcome obstacles and adversity to participate in high school athletics.
Smith plays football and baseball for WEHS. During the 2011 football season, he lost his father to a heart attack. His uncle, who had become his surrogate father, later died of a heart attack as well. A few months later, Smith lost a teammate and friend when Michael Vincent was killed in a car accident.
Despite losing three people as close to him as anyone could be, Smith did not miss a beat as a student or an athlete. He started at linebacker for a state semifinal football team last fall and is finishing up his senior of baseball this spring, inspiring his teammates with his resilient spirit.
