Leadership Day at Alvaton

An important purpose of a Leadership Day is to invite stakeholders (parents, students, educators, business partners, and community members) to come learn about and see our school’s leadership model, as well as to provide an opportunity for our staff and students to share their leadership insights and experiences with those who attend our Leadership Day. This year we hosted our FIRST Leadership Day and had the opportunity to showcase how we work with the 7 Habits and our commitment toward becoming a Leader in Me Lighthouse School.

Our participants gained a better understanding of the 7 Habits and how they are incorporated into our daily learning, witnessed student achievement through our leadership notebooks and discovered the joys of being a Leader in Me school. They also had the opportunity to witness our students being leaders by: being guests at our Leader of the Month celebration, Lego lessons, club and Student Lighthouse Team presentations, singing songs, and acting as tour guides and greeters. The students at Alvaton definitely put on a SHINING display! We are PROUD TO BE A LEADER IN ME SCHOOL!

Leader in Me Day

On September 25th, Alvaton Elementary will be hosting a Leader in Me day. We invite educators and the community to come visit our school, and see how the Leader in Me works at Alvaton Elementary. To register for this fantastic one day event, please contact the school by calling the office at 270-843-8067.

Grandparent's Day
Alvaton Elementary welcomed close to 450 special guests on September 8, 2014. The parking lots were full and any passerby would wonder what was going on at Alvaton Elementary. The answer to that questions was simply-- Alvaton celebrates our Grandparents!
The official day to celebrate grandparents was Sunday, September 7, 2014. A declaration signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1978 declared National Grandparents Day would be the first Sunday following Labor Day each year. This National day would be a day that grandparents and senior citizens could be recognized and honored for their contributions.
We wanted to give our students the opportunity to celebrate their grandparents at school in honor of this special day. Grandparents were invited to join their grandchild(ren) for lunch and spend time in the school with one another. The smiles and conversations that took place are memories these children and adults alike will cherish forever.
A special thank you to the volunteers, faculty and staff, cafeteria employees, and especially the grandparents that attended for making the event such a success!
Alvaton Student Service Project

Our Student Lighthouse Team helped organize a can tab collection drive. The can tabs were collected and taken to Shriner's Hospital in Lexington. Shriner's has treated Alvaton student Lucas Douglas since he was six days old. Lucas is now a fifth grader. He received an excellent report when he went for his yearly check-up on September 27 and turned in our can tab collection.

The Leader in Me

Habit 1: Be proactive
Take action and take responsibility. This is the basis of all further habits and a cornerstone of success. You will influence your life more than anyone else. You have the opportunity to use your free will and hard work to change yourself and your circumstances. You are only a victim if you allow yourself to be; if you are reactive rather than proactive. The emphasis of this habit is to do whatever is in your power to improve your situation. You are the creator, the actor and the doer in your life; get started and "just do it". Since, in a situation, the thing that you can influence and change the most is your response to it - choose your response to any situation and you will find yourself in control. No one can "make" you angry if you decide you don't want to get angry. Don't let life set you up to be in a bad situation. Have confidence in yourself and believe that you can succeed at anything in life.
